Milieu Quiz 2008-09

After the success of the Ispat Quiz, the Milieu Organizing Committee decided to give the PCSAGK the responsibility of hosting the inter college quiz that was part of Milieu, the annual fest of Presidency College. It was held in the Physics Lecture Theatre I on 7th January and was attended by as many as twenty eight teams, a rare sight in college fest quizzes. The participants included students not only from most reputed colleges in and around Calcutta, but also from Pune and Durgapur.

The quiz hosts were Sayan and Panda, both from Presidency College, and they enthralled the participating teams and audience alike with some brilliant questions from all walks of life.

The prelims saw a cut off of 13 and the eight teams made it to the finals - Clueless, Potoldanga Thunder Club, 42, Boye Gechhe, D.A.T.A. Base, Juxtaposed, St. Xaviers' College and Scottish Church College.

The mains had an exciting finish as Potoldanga ensured their win with a correct answer in the very last question of the quiz. Had they not answered it, Boye Gechhe (second place) would have had the opportunity of answering it themselves and clinching the quiz. Clueless, an all-Presidency team, finished in third place.

PCSAGK would like to thank the Milieu Organising Committee, and Dipendra in particular, for giving them the opportunity to conduct the quiz.

Sayan Bhattacharya (Economics Honours 3rd Year) hosted the quiz, assisted by Debak Das (History Honours 3rd Year). The preliminaries saw thirteen three member teams battle out for a spot in the mains and the cut off was 5 for the six teams that made it.

Freshers' Quiz 2008-09

The Freshers’ Quiz, 2008-09, was organized by the Presidency College Society for the Acquisition of General Knowledge on the 15th of November at the Economics Lecture Theatre.

The response from the “new kids in the block” was truly overwhelming, with as many as 11 teams (2 member teams comprising 1st year students) battling it out in the Prelims to secure the much coveted spot among the 6 teams that would qualify for the Mains.

We had a special screening of Blood Brothers directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, courtesy the Red Ribbon Club, our social partner. Bappaditya Mukherjee (State Coordinator, Red Ribbon Club) also made a short but moving speech about how the youth should come together for the cause of eliminating and spreading awareness about HIV-AIDS.

The Prelims followed. After a closely fought round of elimination, 6 well deserving teams were left for the final battle. The quiz was conducted by the Club President Sayan Bhattacharya, with Panda being the man behind the laptop .It was a fiercely competitive quiz right from round one, with hardly any questions being left unanswered. With a brilliant long-chain round (designed by Nairit), a few sitters, and several teasers, the spot of the winner ended up as a tie. Devaditya and Deepanjan (Riders on the Storm) and Saroni and Samayita (Zeitgeist) were jointly declared the winners with a score of 80. The team of Sriyanka and Shiladitya (Nameless) also put up a brilliant show and finished with a close 75 at the 3rd spot.

The quiz was indeed one of a high standard, and what was most rewarding to see, was the enthusiasm among the freshers, especially among the girls. They were indeed the main ingredient for making the Freshers’ Quiz a grand success.

The PCSAGK is grateful to the Principal, Dr. Sanjib Ghosh and Prof. Amitava Chatterjee (Head of the Department, Department of Economics) for their cooperation. We hope there are many more such successful sessions of thought exercise in the days to come.

A New Beginning

The Presidency College Society for Acquisition of General Knowledge – popularly known as the Presidency Quiz Club - was re-established on September 8 2008 by the Governing Body of the college after a growing need was felt for a society exclusively for quizzers.

The Society is the by far the oldest quiz club in India, having been established in 1838. Members then included prominent Derozians of that age like Peary Chand Mitra (first President), Rev. Krishna Mohan Banerjee and Debendranath Tagore amongst others. In the wake of the nationalist movement the activities of the society gradually waned.

The Presidency Quiz Club has been formed again with the primary objective of promoting quizzing in the college through quiz sessions, organizing quizzes and developing quizzers.

The governing body of the Society is:

Teachers in charge –          Prof. Nandalal Chakraborti
                                        Prof. Jayshree Mukhopadhyay
